When a snap of cold weather is forecast — the kind that comes with a biting wind — I always find myself reaching for something warm to wrap around my neck. It’s usually the moment I realise I want a quick knitting project: something satisfying to knit and wearable almost as soon as it’s off the needles.
If you don’t fancy knitting another straightforward scarf, but still want a fast, rewarding project, my simple variation on the feather and fan lace pattern is a lovely alternative. You can wear it as a traditional scarf, or wrap it around your neck as I have done in the photo below.
The design has enough movement and texture to keep things interesting, and the pattern itself is repetitive enough to knit easily while watching television or listening to a podcast. Best of all, it’s completely adaptable — you can knit it as long or as short as you like, making it perfect for last-minute cold snaps.
For my version, I chose Rowan Alpaca Sparkle, a new yarn from Rowan.
Alpaca Sparkle has been launched alongside a dedicated pattern book featuring garments and accessories designed for the yarn.
Alpaca Sparkle is a blend of alpaca, virgin wool and cotton, with a hint of sparkle running through it – tiny sequins. The tiny sequins don’t dominate the fabric; they simply catch the light as you move, adding a subtle touch of luxe. The result is a yarn that feels warm and soft, but also special enough to elevate a simple knit.
The fluffy texture of Alpaca Sparkle works beautifully with lace stitch. It softens the stitch definition slightly, giving the fabric a gentle, wearable feel, while the sparkle adds interest without overwhelming the pattern. Alpaca Sparkle is available in six shades.
Here’s the pattern I created using the feather and fan stitch, adapted specifically for Alpaca Sparkle.

While this started life as a quick knit for cold days, the finished wrap feels far more flexible. The feather and fan lace keeps it light enough to wear over a strappy summer dress, adding just a little warmth when the late evening air cools bare shoulders. It’s a useful, adaptable piece — just as welcome on a summer night out as it is on a blustery winter walk.
This is the sort of project I go for when I want something easy to knit, practical to wear, and a little bit special without being complicated. It’s quick, adaptable, and easy to make your own.
